Murder Probe Over Cardiff Baby's Death

Police have launched a murder investigation following the death of a newborn baby from the Cardiff area.

Officers were called to an address in Nelson, Caerphilly county, on Friday evening after reports that a child had stopped breathing.

The six-week-old boy was taken to a hospital in Merthyr before being transferred to The University of Wales Hospital in Cardiff.

The boy died in hospital on Tuesday afternoon, said Gwent Police.

Court officials confirmed that Michael Pearce, 32, had appeared before magistrates charged with causing grievous bodily harm.

Detectives will now question him on suspicion of murder following the baby's death.

Pearce was remanded in custody after Monday's court appearance.

His next date in court is scheduled to be on August 29 at Newport Crown Court.
